We are currently seeing an unprecedented surge of technological innovation and investment into the 'electric vehicle' (EV) and the EV infrastructure sectors. The UK government has shown a strong commitment to decarbonising transport and achieving net-zero emissions by implementing various policies and initiatives.

Recognising the need for change, both national and local governments in the UK have taken steps to raise awareness and drive the transition towards EVs. Legislative changes have been introduced and a growing emphasis on expanding the charging infrastructure across the country to alleviate range anxiety and support the widespread adoption of EVs.

Substantial efforts are required to meet the ambitious target of significantly increasing the market share of EVs from the current level of around 16% to 80% and above within a decade. This includes not only changing consumer behaviours and building trust but also making considerable investments in charging infrastructure, EV manufacturing, and research and development.

The current battleground

The UK EV and its charging infrastructure has attracted a range of players, from established companies to start-ups and entrepreneurs, all striving to position themselves as leaders in this growing sector. The availability of funding from local councils, central government initiatives, and investment from energy providers has created opportunities for these businesses to thrive and drive innovation.

The challenge

Now, here’s the challenge. Only a few will emerge as market leaders among all those new players. Smaller, less adaptable start-ups will be swallowed up or fail. The expansion rate in the EV and the infrastructure sector over a very short period for many of the businesses involved will be huge. What happens inside those businesses is vital to whether they can survive outside the initial ‘gold rush’ period.

Many growing organisations have limited time to actually analyse their business as it grows and understand process performance, who is doing what and whether what is being done is effective. If you are busy leading in a rapidly evolving market, your awareness of how others in your business adapt to an ever-changing landscape may be limited.

The power inside your business

The understanding of the power to change things that your colleagues have through their day-to-day experience of the processes in your business model may not as yet be understood. However, this information, and how to unlock it, is vital when adaptability is key in market conditions that are continually in flux. In fact, plugging into your colleague’s know-how may be the difference between surviving in the EV and EV infrastructure sectors and actually thriving in it.
