Building Trust: Lessons from a 6-Year-Old’s Vision.

What can a 6-year-old teach us about EV infrastructure? More than you’d think. A simple drawing inspired a powerful reflection on how care, trust, and small improvements can transform how Charge Point Operators serve drivers and councils. This is the business case for building trust—one act of care at a time.

Sometimes the most profound insights come from the most unexpected places. Recently, a simple drawing created by my 6-year-old niece sparked a conversation that goes to the heart of what we do at Full Circle CI.

The drawing shows Earth, not as a collection of continents and oceans, but as a smiling, loving presence embracing itself beneath a canopy of stars. Created after a classroom discussion about our planet and how we can protect it, this artwork captures something that many adults struggle to articulate: the understanding that care, shown simply and genuinely, builds trust.

When Simplicity Meets Profound Truth

At just 6 years old, this young artist grasped something that we in business sometimes overcomplicate. She understood that caring for something precious requires both genuine understanding and meaningful action.

Her drawing doesn’t show complex systems or technical solutions, it shows love, protection, and the simple recognition that our planet deserves our care.

This perspective resonates deeply with the challenges facing the UK’s EV charging infrastructure today. Across the sector, we see a similar dynamic at play: the difference between those who truly understand what it means to care for their users and those who remain disconnected from the real-world experience of EV drivers.

The Trust Deficit in EV Charging

The EV charging landscape is filled with well-intentioned operators working to build reliable networks and advance electric mobility. Many genuinely care about supporting the UK’s decarbonisation goals and creating positive experiences for drivers. Yet despite these good intentions, trust between drivers and charging networks remains fragile.

We’ve witnessed firsthand how councils struggle with persistent EV charging issues managed by their CPO, including extended repair times that breach contractual agreements, chargers displaying that they’re functioning properly when they’re not, and communication failures that leave both councils and drivers uncertain about fault status and resolution timelines.

This real-world experience has reinforced that the gap between operator intentions and user expectations often stems from communication breakdowns, and misaligned priorities rather than lack of care.

What’s often missing isn’t capability or care, it’s communication between the parties. When operators genuinely understand what councils need to serve their residents, and what drivers actually experience during their charging sessions, the path to improvement becomes remarkably clear.

The Power of Incremental Change

My niece’s drawing reminds us that caring doesn’t require complexity. Sometimes the most powerful changes are the simplest ones, implemented consistently and with genuine intent to improve the user experience.

This is where continuous improvement becomes transformative. Rather than overwhelming operators with massive transformation programmes, we focus on helping teams identify and implement incremental changes that compound over time.

The Business Case for Trust

Building trust isn’t just morally right, it’s commercially essential. When EV drivers trust a charging network, they return to it repeatedly, recommend it to others, and become advocates for electric mobility itself. Trust drives utilisation, which in turn drives return on investment and supports the business case for expanding charging infrastructure.

Conversely, operators who fail to build trust face a vicious cycle. Poor user experiences lead to negative reviews, reduced utilisation, and ultimately, financial underperformance.

In a sector where public perception of charging reliability directly impacts EV adoption rates, this matters far beyond individual operator performance.

Looking Forward

The transition to electric mobility represents one of the most significant infrastructure challenges of our time.

Success requires more than just installing charging points, it demands building an ecosystem that users can trust and rely upon.

My niece’s drawing captures something essential about this challenge. She understood that protecting something precious requires not just good intentions, but genuine care expressed through consistent actions. Her Earth smiles because it knows it’s loved and protected.

This isn’t an impossible dream for the EV charging sector. It’s an achievable goal that requires operators to embrace the same simple truth captured in the drawing: that care, shown consistently and authentically, builds unshakeable trust.

The question isn’t whether individual operators can make a difference, it’s whether they’re willing to start where they are, with what they have, and commit to getting better every day.
